The first use of the word “coworking” in relation to a shared office environment was by Brad Neuberg in 2005. He was an intrepid entrepreneur with big dreams who created the first coworking space, as we know it today, in San Francisco. Since then the growth of coworking has been consistently high.

What Is Coworking?

Coworking is not just about the sharing of infrastructure and cost, it is about belonging to a community, accessibility and sustainability. Coworking is a new way of working and sharing. Coworking spaces are designed to provide a productive and collaborative environment for their dynamic inhabitants and created without corporate constraints on what is perceived to be an “office” environment offering flexible memberships to suit most needs.

It’s estimated that by 2024 almost 5 million people will be working from co-working spaces- an increase of 158% in comparison with 2020! Before the coronavirus hit the world economy, around 77% of the co-working operators surveyed said they plan to expand by opening new locations.

As more corporate companies embrace flexible work practices, we can expect the capacity to continue to grow over time. As serviced offices and remote teams will become increasingly important for space operators the growth of coworking is essential.

Increase In Remote Working

According to a survey conducted in May 2020, 56% of professionals in the U.S. expect to work remotely at least part-time, and around 29% expect to work remotely on a full-time basis. Such insights reflect not only how work practices are changing for individuals, but also how businesses are embracing working with small remote teams regardless of their location.
